Axis Apprentice’s African Adventure

Posted on

Axis Apprentice Painter and Decorator Francesca Fordham was selected to join a team of 300 volunteers from all over the world to help conduct works on two schools in a township near Cape Town in South Africa.

Fran applied via her college, North Kent who had already awarded her the Principal’s Award and Apprentice of the Year Award.

Works comprised: building four classrooms, a security hut and two toilet blocks; internal and external painting of the existing school as well as painting and decorating furniture; constructing external benches and stands for spectators; creating a playground and pathways between schools and classrooms and marking out the basketball court.

“I had an amazing time in Cape Town and enjoyed every moment of it. I am planning on fundraising to go back next year. Words cannot describe my time out there. It was just incredible to see how everyone got stuck into working all week and didn’t stop until the very end. I would recommend for anyone to go as it is such a great experience.”

Axis Apprentices make up 10% of our work force: in 2019,  the number of apprentices at Axis sits at 92 with a total of 27 new apprentices being recruited this year.
