A specialist decoration project undertaken by Axis Heritage team has won the coveted Premier Trophy, ‘Highly Decorative’ category, awarded by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).

Axis’ heritage project was undertaken on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and comprised the internal redecoration of their main banquet hall.

The scope of works included: the lining and redecoration of walls and ceilings, windows and dados; the repairs and replacement of damaged timber floor planks and the sanding, lacquering and French Polishing of the repaired flooring; restoration of the timber panels that surround the Grand Banqueting Hall and the timber doors; refurbishment of the silver display cabinet and redecoration of the dome lighting.

There was a substantial amount of gold leaf throughout the Grand Banqueting Hall and this was completely re-gilded under our direction by a Master Gilder to achieve the period-accurate finish. The judges noted:

The shields that were re-gilded were a fine example of the craft. A great finish to the work to produce a very bright environment for hosting functions.

Axis’ work was undertaken in a stunning Grade II listed building and the room is historically and culturally significant and, as you’d expect for a company of Master Painters, the people who occupy the building are very knowledgeable about what goes on their walls. It was no ordinary job; the client, the building, the room. Every aspect was meticulously planned and carefully considered.

Axis’ entry was up against some tough competition and excellent work, including the restoration of decorative features on the Cutty Sark, but we are very proud to say the Heritage project was selected as the overall winner. The PDA say:

The objective of the Premier Trophy Awards is to demonstrate the diversity of skill and craft, show efficiency of service to clients and to develop the highest standards of excellence for the industry.
