Axis’ History with Heritage Properties

Posted on

Axis Europe has built up a portfolio of Heritage properties that have included numerous Grade I and Grade II listed buildings. We have sensitively and skilfully completed restoration and refurbishment work for: South Kensington Estate, Knight Frank, The Portman Estate, Royal Hospital Chelsea, Lincoln’s Inn and Gray’s Inn.

South Kensington Estate Ltd awarded us the contract for their Grade II listed properties located in the heart of South Kensington. We liaised with English Heritage and employed specialist trades, including iron works and stone masonry, to complete the scope of works that included: external repairs, redecoration, Fabric Maintenance, repairs to masonry, as well as metalwork and roof renewal.

From Knight Frank, we were given the contract to undertake the internal refurbishment and restoration of their mid-nineteenth century Grade II listed building, which is divided internally into flats and remained occupied throughout the work. New electrical wiring was needed throughout the property as well as replastering following the discovery of hidden water pipes which left the walls in a bad condition.

The Portman Estate, part of the aristocratic Portman Family since the sixteenth century, involved repairs to windows, doors, floors, previously-painted surfaces and roof repairs with some areas needing a complete replacement.

We have also worked on a refurbishment project for the prestigious Royal Hospital Chelsea’s Great Hall, to reinstate and preserve the features of the Grade I listed building which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the seventeenth century. The work included iron, joinery and masonry repairs, marble restoration and electrical rewiring prior to painting, French polishing, brass reinstatement and the sensitive cleaning of all fixtures.

The Estates Department of Lincoln’s Inn awarded us the external repairs and redecorations contract for its collection of listed properties, comprising of approximately 363,000 square feet of commercial and residential accommodation, sited off Chancery lane. Lincoln’s Inn makes up one of the four Inns of Court, we’ve also completed work at another member of the Inns of Court, Gray’s Inn. At Gray’s Inn we sensitively restored and carried out internal and external refurbishments of the Grade II listed property located at 5 Field Road, often referred to as ‘The Dolls House’, including roof restoration, stonework and metalwork.

We always deliver an exceptional service, which is why we have been trusted with these precious sites that have been around for centuries. There needs to be a thoughtfulness for this type of work and an appreciation for all the history that these building have been exposed to, which is why we always liaise with the appropriate people beforehand and only enlist the most knowledgeable and skilled workers.
