Volunteers Support London Poppy Day

Posted on

On Thursday 2nd November 2,500 collectors took to the streets and stations of London to support the Royal British Legion in their biggest campaign of the year – the Poppy Appeal.

Of the 2,500 collectors, 980 were uniformed personnel from the Royal Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines and 1,500 were volunteers, including 45 Axis employees. The sheer volume of collectors made it the largest one-day street collection of its kind in the UK.

Over the course of the day Axis volunteers helped to distribute poppies at Vauxhall, Canary Wharf and North Greenwich raising a combined total of £47,242. Hardeep Rayat, Internal Recruiter volunteered at Canary Wharf station and said, “It was my first time volunteering and it was a great experience. I loved being involved on the day”.

Although many employees volunteered for a couple of hours, some committed to a full day including Paul Glover, Senior Supervisor who completed a 13 hour stint in North Greenwich. He commented, “It was a fantastic day as always; the generosity was amazing. We had several £20 and £50 notes coming in, we even counted over £100 in 1 minute – truly amazing!”

The volunteers were overwhelmed by the generosity of others who helped to raise £8,402 in North Greenwich, £8,806 in Vauxhall and a record breaking £30,034 in Canary Wharf. The money raised will help to provide lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans and their families.
