Demelza recently received a donation of £54,000 from The Axis Foundation to help them continue their mission of ‘helping those who may not lead a long life, to live a full life’. This will help to fund their ‘Adopt a Nurse’ initiative and is the equivalent of 2,680 hours of nursing care.
Axis’ partnership with Demelza Hospice Care for Children started 13 years ago, prior to The Axis Foundation being formed. During this time, over £600,000 has been donated to support the charity’s ‘Adopt a Nurse’ programme. This helps to fund qualified nurses who provide 24-hour specialist care to children with life-limiting illnesses, which is vital in providing them with a better quality of life.
Axis Foundation funds are raised through an annual corporate donation and corporate events such as our charity ball and supplier golf day. Axis people are also heavily involved in personal fundraising through activities that range from skydives and bake sales to dotty days and abseils.
The work that the nurses and staff at Demelza do is vital for the parents and children who depend on them, Demelza Parent Mette explained: “As well as memory-making and emotional support Demelza also gave practical help – from the community nursing team making phone calls and liaising with various agencies to staff at the hospice tackling paperwork. We didn’t need to worry about the cooking, cleaning, washing – we could just focus on Thomas.”
Demelza has always been close to the hearts of people at Axis and the Axis Foundation but more recently the family of one of Axis’ own required their services and was touched by the care and support that they received. This reinforced what was already known, which is that the hospice’s work is invaluable and needs to be made available to as many families as need it.
