Axis has completed a prestigious refurbishment project to reinstate and preserve the features of Royal Hospital Chelsea’s Great Hall, a Grade-I listed building designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the early 1800s.
Before the restoration started the Hall’s priceless artwork was removed, protected and stored. Extensive research was also undertaken to ensure the appropriate materials, applications and craftsmanship provided a period appropriate restoration and all finishes were approved by the English Heritage. The redecoration work began with iron, joinery and masonry repairs, marble restoration and electrical rewiring, prior to painting, French polishing, brass reinstatement and the sensitive cleaning of all fixtures. A big part of the room’s grandeur is delivered from the timber panelling, large doors and dining tables, much of which was stripped back, preserved and finished with a new lacquer coating prior to polishing.
